Holiday Fun Back

Halloween fun-family style!

By Allison Selk
Halloween is a fun time to get dressed up in funny outfits and beg for candy! However, taking the kids around the neighborhood can get boring and kids these days want fun and action! This year, take the kids to some of San Antonio’s most fun Halloween events-more importantly, family friendly events.

On October 22, The San Antonio Botanical Garden hosts its annual “BOOTANICA” celebration. Families can enjoy many fun activities such as a costume parade, a costume house, a bright pumpkin patch, creepy plants lurking about and great photo opportunities.

The” BOOTANICA” celebration is a great way to enjoy the gardens and have the kids celebrate the joys of the Halloween holiday. The event is free with admission. The San Antonio Botanical Garden is located at 555 Funston. Visit www.sabot.org for more information.

Sunday, October 29, dress up the kids and take them downtown to the Institute of Texan Cultures. With the price of admission, the family can enjoy the “Halloween Howl’r” it is hosting on its “Back 40.”

This is a family oriented and safe Halloween experience with food, crafts, games and story telling. Some of the crafts the children can enjoy making are scarecrows, “Day of the Dead” crafts, and pumpkin painting to name a few. You can also get lost in the hay bale maze, ride the Wiggle Waggle train, bob for apples, embark on a treasure hunt or listen to ghostly story telling. And, in the true spirit of Halloween, children can trick or treat, in a safe manner. For more information, visit the Web site www.texancultures.utsa.edu/.

October 30 and 31, the San Antonio Zoo’s annual “Zoo Bo” will be held on the zoo grounds. Special events coordinator, Kate Rawley, said last year, about 8,000 children and parents attended the event over the two-day period. The kids can get dressed up in their favorite costumes and enjoy some Halloween fun, zoo style!

“It is designed as a safe, family-oriented and non-scary Halloween event,” Rawley said.

Rawley said community businesses and organizations set up trick-or-treat stations throughout the zoo and offer candy and prizes to the costumed kids. In addition to the treats, the event will also have games, a costume contest and fun animal education hosted by the San Antonio Zoo.

Tickets go on sale October 1 and are $5 in advance and $6 at the gate. For more information, visit the Web site www.sazoo-aq.org.

This year, “treat” the kids to a fun, family event that will offer a variety of activities keep them busy and happy! With all of the games and excitement, this year will be the best Halloween ever! And, don’t forget, more importantly, it will be safe time for all.
