A Wild and Vivid Land: Stories of South Texas at the Witte Museum

By Allison Selk
This summer the Witte Museum will kick off “A Wild and Vivid Land: Stories of South Texas. This is an exciting exhibit for adults as well as children to experience what Texas was like in the mid-1800s.

The museum describes the exhibit as a “thoroughly engaging experience that stimulates the senses. This groundbreaking exhibition features high-tech light and sound, robotics, touch-screen computers, authentic aromas, a gallery theater, live demonstrations, an original 1800s’ pick-up truck and a chuck wagon, mud wagon and caretta.”

Upon entering the exhibit, a robotic persona of a 19th century tejano firefighter, greets and tells stories about his latest journey with his oxen through South Texas and San Antonio. The exhibit also contains laser technology in the 1849 Main Plaza of San Antonio and in the ranching area, light and sound create an exciting experience with a cattle stampede.

Wake up and smell the coffee! As you pass the chuck wagon, smell the fresh morning coffee brewing from the cowboy’s breakfast. Head into town and “encounter” hotel workers, dry-good storeowners and familiar figures such as Juan Sequin and Henrietta King.

Children will enjoy the great “interaction” between the characters in the exhibit and the ability to “pitch in.”

“Children can load a burro with goods to take back to the ranch, see an old-time dry goods store, and figure out how to get your cattle up the trail and to market with an interactive game,” said Marise McDermott, president and CEO of the Witte Museum. “This is an experience, theatrical exhibit about old South Texas. You will encounter personalities, like a chili queen or a tejano firefighter or a journalist from the east.”

After taking the kids to the exhibit, head out to the H-E-B Science Treehouse. The treehouse is newly open after renovations this winter. Inside is an array of science experiments and challenges for kids with experiments with energy, air power, machines, eco-science, weather and sound waves. The kids can also check out the great water exhibits that feed directly from the San Antonio River.

The Witte Museum is located at 3801 Broadway. Hours are Monday, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call (210) 357-1900 for admission and information.
