An African safari…
Texas style

By Allison Selk
Are you ready for an African safari, only Texas style? Then load up the kids and drive them to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch located just north of San Antonio.
This isn’t your normal family drive; the kids will actually enjoy this adventure and not complain about being bored!
The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch houses more than 50 different species of animals such as zebras, ostriches, buffalo, lemurs, antelope and llamas, to name a few. And these animals are all in view from the family car.

“The ranch is so different than a traditional zoo setting in that the visitors are in their ‘cage’ and the animals are roaming freely,” marketing and public relations spokesperson Tiffany Soechting said.

Soechting also mentioned it is a great way to sneak in some education without the kids even realizing it!
Upon entering the ranch, you will have the opportunity to purchase animal feed and entice the animals to your car. Don’t forget to take pictures. This may be the only time your kids will be close enough to count a donkey’s teeth! The drive through the ranch is so interesting, with animals from many continents available in one area. Watch the kids’ faces as the zebra looks at them through the window or an ostrich pops his beady little eyes into the car!

If the kids are restless, get out of the family truckster and try the walking safari. The wildlife ranch boasts a possible personal encounter with the majestic giraffes as they look down from their towering viewpoint. And if your kids talk to the macaws; they might talk back.

You can also pack a picnic lunch or purchase food from the ranch’s snack bar and enjoy eating among the sounds and sights of nature. It’s a relaxing and fun way to spend time in the out of doors.

While outside, take the little ones to the petting zoo for a chance to get a close and personal look at some of the smaller animals. They will love to feed, pet and watch the animals run around.

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch also is a home for endangered or threatened species and has had success breeding some of these animals.
If you are looking for a fun, educational and relaxing way to enjoy a day with the kids, try the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch; the most visited safari park in Texas!

The ranch is open from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the summer months. It is located between San Antonio and New Braunfels via I-35, exit 175 and then seven miles west on Natural Bridge Caverns Road. Call (830) 438-7400 for more information or visit the Web site www.wildliferanchtexas.com
