Can you believe how fast the summer flew by? It seems each year the summers are shorter and shorter and school seems longer and longer!

Get the kids in the school mode by reading some fun back-to-school books this month.

These books are sure to have your kids laughing and wondering, now what school is this?

“Miss Mingo and the First Day of School” by Jamie Harper, from Candlewick Press.
Miss Mingo is a beautiful pink flamingo who teaches a class of very shy students. The first day is rough, no one wants to speak, they all sit on their mats on the floor, gazing around the room.

When Miss Mingo asks the students to share a little about themselves, they are scared, until she gets the ball rolling by sipping a shrimp shake-eating or drinking shrimp is how flamingos get their pink color, something non of her students knew! Everyone chimes in on their special talents like a Narwhal with one large tooth, a snake that smells with its tongue and a monkey with an ever growing nose! It is a cute book that shows how everyone has something fun and unique about them.

“Teacher’s Pets” by Dayle Ann Dodds, from Candlewick Press.
This book shows the dedication teachers have to their students and families, oh and to the family pet! Miss Fry is a young teacher who allows her students to bring something from home to share with the class. The first sharing day, a student brings a pet rooster and leaves it at school… the neighbors say he crows too much.

Each week following one student brings in the family pet and leaves it at school for various reasons such as, “he hides in my mother’s slippers or it ate her sister’s homework…” It is a comical and fun book for the kids.

“The Monster in the Backpack” by Lisa Moser, from Candlewick Press.
Annie was very excited about her first day of school. She had a new backpack, it came with pink and blue flowers, it came with a zipper and it came with a monster!

At first Annie was scared of the monster, then she became annoyed with his antics. You will have to read this hilarious book to find out what happens to the monster and to Annie while at school!
